Spotlight on Fleet Management in the UK

By Chris Miller – ABAX UK Chief Executive

ABAX Fleet Management

The aftermath of the late 2000s financial crisis has put a clear focus on technological advances that enable businesses to save costs and increase financial margins.

This is the context in which we now see a significant rise of Fleet Management Systems across Europe.

Vehicles, especially commercial vehicles, play an essential part in the national economy of most European countries. Combined, this forms a €250 billion industry.

The margins are small and there are two main drivers that make thousands of European businesses seek out technical solutions in order to improve their financial situation. Fleet management systems are a very popular solution.

The main drivers for choosing a fleet management system are primarily led by economical and regulatory measures. The financial crisis hit the industries across Europe very hard, however, many businesses – especially within construction and transport – are seeing the light again. Even though UK businesses experience strong growth rates, the lessons have been learned and cost control and efficiency are kept front of mind.

This also applies to the control of commercial vehicle fleets. Rising fuel costs, in particular, have been a key driver for implementing fleet management systems in the UK. Savings between 10 to 20 percent on fuel costs alone will always be a decisive game changer for any business leader operating vehicle fleets.

Another important aspect of the rise of fleet management solutions are the introduction of digital tachographs. A small number of suppliers have already started to offer digital tachographs which allow the company to download data directly from the trucks and heavy vehicles onto servers and cloud based operating systems, directly from the office – this saves a lot of time for companies, regardless the size of the fleet.

The UK is one of the European markets where adoption of new technology is the highest and is also one of the most advanced markets for fleet management solutions. From the total number of 4.1 million commercial vehicles, more than 33 percent are today controlled by fleet management solutions.

ABAX and Fleet Management Systems in the UK

At ABAX, we are set to offer our ABAX Fleet Management System with digital tachograph capability in the UK this summer.

This will make it easier to update on your vehicles status, document all activities and ensure a cost effective operation. Our system will also make it easy for you to comply with laws and regulations.

This system has proven to be very popular in the other European countries we operate – Finland in particular.

ATFs Allowed to Carry Out Annual Tests – RHA News

ATFs will now be allowed to carry out annual testing of trucks as well as provide test lanes, ending the monopoly held by DVSA staff. The change is confirmed by the Department for Transport in its Motoring Services Strategy document, published last week. based on a system of quality regulation, and we have now urged the Department to press ahead with the change as a priority. Opening testing to ATFs will boost investment in equipment and training.

Hauliers will be allowed to test their own trucks, DfT says. That is an important change from the strategy consultation, which specifically excluded on-fleet testing by operators and follows strong lobbying by the RHA.

The right to test will in future be based solely on competence and qualification to do the job.

The Motoring Services Strategy covers DVSA, the DVLA and the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) and promises improved performance on a range of services including driver testing, operator and driver licensing, as well greater use of the web in its work.

You can read the full article here.

The RHA offers a range of services to support your vehicle testing regime. Our vehicle inspection service can give you confidence in your maintenance provider, while RHA Training offers a range of courses designed to help optimise driver behaviour, and thereby, vehicle life.

COVID 19 Statement

The partial lock-down in the UK has led to many movers wondering if they are required to temporarily shut down their business.

Before you make a decision, please consider the following.

The lock-down is aimed primarily at non-essential retail and leisure in an attempt to slow the spread of the virus.

Transport and freight are considered essential.

If you choose to continue working, there are a few steps you can take to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.

Follow the guidelines issued by the Government and instruct your staff to do likewise.

For domestic removals, clean all door handles and handrails, etc at both premises with an appropriate sanitiser.
Frequently clean all equipment (including vehicle cab interiors) with soap and water or a sanitiser.
Only send the minimum number of staff required (usually 2) to complete the job.
Request from the customer that they ask family and friends to stay away during the move.
Ask the customer to keep their distance during the move.
Don’t do home-visit surveys. Conduct surveys over the phone or by video call.

AIM believes that you should avoid all unnecessary work, but carry out essential work if possible.

AIM can’t and won’t tell you whether you should close your business. That is your decision.
