Moving Large Kitchen Appliances

Moving Large Kitchen Appliances

Often referred to as white goods, large kitchen appliances are fridges, freezers, washing machines, dishwasher and tumble dryers. Although such appliances now come in a variety of colours, most removals companies still refer to them as white goods and most customers know what is meant by the term. On an average house move, these bulky items can be a significant volume of the total to be moved, but can also slow the move down if not properly prepared.

Fridges and Freezers

It is recommended that freezers, fridges and fridge-freezers are defrosted and dry before the day of the move. This means running down the stock of frozen foods in the weeks and days before moving and defrosting a day or two before the big day. If this isn’t done, there is a risk that the freezer will defrost in the removals van and leak water on the other items. Wet cardboard boxes collapse easily, which could make the load unstable, so the knock-on effect can be very damaging.

Refrigeration appliances are basically a container with a heat exchanger and that requires a fluid or gas to be pumped through the system. After moving the item, it should be left to settle for 12 to 24 hours before turning back on. With modern appliances, this is disputable but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Or, if in doubt, check the appliance’s manual.

Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

As with fridges, any appliance that uses water (or extracts water) should be disconnected and thoroughly drained before moving. Removals companies are rarely insured to disconnect or reconnect appliances.

On delivery, the remover will usually leave washing machines and dishwashers in front of, but not slotted into, their final position in your kitchen. This is so they can be plumbed-in without having to pull them out again. So remember to leave ample space on the kitchen floor.

Tumble dryers that expel the moisture through a vent do not usually contain water, but condenser dryers do. So preparing your dryer will depend on what type you have.

Cookers

Cookers and hobs should be disconnected and reconnected by a professional gas fitter or electrician.
