What is Containerized Storage?

How Do Removals Companies Store My Goods?

The industry standard storage container is a 250 cu ft wooden container that is stored in a warehouse. The containers are standardized to allow them to be loaded onto removals trucks, where they can be loaded and unloaded at the customer’s premises.

This reduces the physical handling time, so the goods are only manually loaded and unloaded once during the storage period. Once the containers are filled with your goods and furniture, they are not opened again until they are delivered.

Am I Limited on What I Can Store?

There is no limit on the amount you can store. Some customers store the entire contents of their home. However, there are some restrictions on what can be stored, (E.G. illegal goods, jewellery, precious metals, perishable goods, food, plants, etc.)

Do I Need an Inventory of My Goods?

Yes. This is usually provided by the removals company. The inventory is completed at the time of loading, so both the remover and the customer know which goods are in which numbered container. Apart from the obvious benefit of being able to easily locate your goods, the inventory is vital for insurance purposes.

Do I Have to Pay, To Access My Storage?

This depends on the remover. Usually, the containers are stacked in a warehouse, so there is labour and administration involved if you want access to a container. This usually means the remover will charge a small fee for every visit to your container(s).

For security reasons, any access to your stored goods will require supervision. This means the removal company will have to arrange staff for your visit. Therefore, visits to storage are usually by appointment only.

How Do I Pay?

This depends on the removals & storage company, but storage fees are usually paid in advance, by Direct Debit or recurring Debit Card payments. Some companies charge monthly and some charge weekly, so you should discuss the payment options when you ask for a quote.

Payments for accessing your storage unit are often added to the next month’s storage payment, but this depends on the storage provider.

What Happens If I Get Behind with My Payments?

Storage providers have clearly written Terms & Conditions that explain this. The usual practice is to notify the customer and make arrangements for the arrears to be paid before the goods are released.

The removals/storage company has the right to with-hold your goods until any outstanding payments are cleared. This is often referred to as “Lien”.
